About Gallaudet University

Gallaudet University is a federally-chartered university for the education of the deaf and hard of hearing, and it is located in the US capital of Washington, DC, which has a population of more than 599 000 inhabitants, that rises to a number of more than 1 million, during workweek, due to the numerous commuters from the city's surrounding suburbs.

Gallaudet was established in 1864 and was named after Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a notable figure in the advancement of deaf education. It was the first educational institution of its kind, in the world, and it is still the only higher education institution in which all programs and services are specifically designed to accommodate students with hearing problems.

Athletics

Gallaudet's sports teams are known as the Bisons and they compete in NCAA Division III, in the North Eastern Athletic Conference, as of the fall semester of the 2010-2011 academic year, in various men's and women's sports, which include football, soccer, softball, basketball, baseball, volleyball and tennis. Their distinctive colors are buff and blue and their mascot is the Bison.
